Is a bargain-priced fake Prada handbag worth a €300,000 fine? Twenty-nine percent of HolidayExtras.com customers admitted they'd be tempted to find out, in a recent online poll.

Following recent news that holiday-makers now face fines of up to €300,000 for buying luxury fakes in some European countries, HolidayExtras.com, the UK's market-leading travel add-ons company asked its customers if they were ever tempted by counterfeit designer goods when on holiday abroad.

Eleven per cent said they were tempted and had bought them in the past, with 18% admitting that if it looks good and the price is right then they will cough up the cash for dodgy designer gear.

Over half of travellers asked (52%) said they avoid fake goods as they rarely turn out to be the bargains they appear, with 19% opposed to the sale of designer copies on ethical or legal grounds.

HolidayExtras.com's fashion expert, Michele Betzner, said:

"A beautiful designer handbag is on every woman's wish list but you have to remember that if you are tempted by a counterfeit you will contributing to organised crime.

“Designer goods, including bags are often beautifully made, will last for years and are usually well worth the investment. Buying a designer bag in a reputable shop will allow you reassurance that you are getting the real thing and most designer bag manufacturers give you a year’s guarantee which you wouldn't get with a fake. You’ll also avoid a hefty fine which would make the cheaper fake far more expensive in the long run."
